The position will be hosted in the Foams & Complexity group at the School of Physics, Trinity College Dublin. Our
interest is in the structure and flow of amorphous Soft Matter system, such as foams, emulsion and nanosuspensions
which we probe through experiments and simulations. Our current research effort is focused on the interplay between
the microscopic structure and non-linear macroscopic flow of 2D nanoparticle suspensions.

SoundBounce is an SME (Small to Medium Enterprise) based in Dublin, which has developed a novel acoustic material
for use in the automotive, aerospace, construction, and power generation industries. The company is at the forefront
of development of new materials for the acoustics industry and provides exciting employment opportunities to work
on the next generation of acoustic materials.

Job Description:

In recent years a new class of acoustic materials with highly unusual properties has been developed as an acoustic
metamaterial. These materials have the ability to alter the reflection, absorption or transmission of sound in a
controlled manner that is unlike any traditional or natural material. These metamaterials are often based on novel
materials with complex geometric structures that must be precision manufactured to achieve the acoustic properties
desired.

SoundBounce is an acoustic metamaterial for superior noise reduction developed in Ireland. SoundBounce is a
composite material, comprising of a naturally occurring responsive material enclosed in a cellular shaped skin. The
TANDEM research project will focus on the chemical characterisation and optimisation of this novel metamaterial and
the work is funded through the EU H2020 SME instrument.

We are looking for an experienced, experimental researcher in the area of complex fluids. This EU-funded project
focusses on the development of complex fluids optimised for sound insulation. This involves synthesising various
structured fluids, characterising their structural and rheological properties and develop an understanding of their
acoustic shielding capabilities to advance the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of this metamaterial from the current
TRL 4 to TRL 6/7. The researcher will be embedded in Prof. Möbius’s Soft matter research group.

TANDEM is an EU H2020 SME Instrument funded project that brings together expertise from acoustics, applied
mathematics, and chemistry to deliver the next generation of acoustic materials.

SoundBounce is an acoustic metamaterial providing superior noise reduction and is the focus of project TANDEM. It is
a paradigm shift over the current state of the art, enabling the creation of smaller, lighter products with unrivalled low
frequency performance. This is critical in the construction, automotive, power generation and aerospace sectors
where space is at a premium.

Person Specification

Qualifications

The candidate must have a PhD in a relevant field such as physics, chemistry, materials science, chemical Engineering
and/or equivalent industrial experience.

Knowledge & Experience (Essential & Desirable)

A strong technical background in materials synthesis, colloid and interface science or a similar research area, as
evidenced by publications in these fields.

Essential skills:

• Expertise in the formulation, functionalization, and characterization of colloidal suspensions.
• Familiarity with materials characterization techniques such as SEM, TEM, DLS, UV Vis etc.
• Well-developed ability to communicate technical concepts to non-experts.
• Writing papers and giving presentations on the research conducted.
• Good leadership skills with the ability to maintain excellent working relationships with both internal and
external partners is also required.
• Excellent communication and written skills.

Desired Skills:

• Experience with clays and/or 2D nanoparticle suspensions.
• Experience with other multiphase materials such as emulsions, foams and gels.
• Experience in rheology measurements.

Salary and Contract Terms

The post is funded by the SoundBounce project for a fixed-term of 2 years. Salary will be placed on the Irish University
Association’s Researcher salary scales between point 2 and point 9 dependent on experience (€37,757 – € 46,853).
